Abita Brewery’s New Charity Beer: Saint Gleason.

The Abita Brewery in Abita Springs, Louisiana does more than just brew an awesome selection of great beer.  This local company also goes above and beyond to support the community it serves.

Following Hurricane Katrina, Abita put out Restoration Ale, a nice barley pils with citrus undertones that comes in a gorgeous bottle with the New Orleans skyline in silhouette.  At 5%, this beer is an easy choice to accompany pizza or just drink during the game.  Abita donated .25 from each sale to help rebuild New Orleans and areas hit hard by the storm.  Over $500,000 has been donated so far.

Abbey Ale is another charity beer released to help aid St. Joseph’s Abby, a local monastery where the monks traditionally brewed and sold beer to support themselves.  Deep in color and rich in flavor, this bad boy comes in a big, ole bottle.  At 8%, please be careful with this one.

S.O.S. (Save Our Shore) is the latest charity beer to make an impact in Louisiana.  Abita released the potent 7%, unfiltered Weizen and wheaty pilsner following the BP Oil Spill.  Since its release, over $275,000 has been donated to fishermen and the clean up effort.  Also in a big 22oz. bottle, but it’s for charity, so have two.

Saint Gleason is the next charity beer scheduled for release in February of 2012.  Saint Gleason will be an Imperial Red Ale and the proceeds will go to Team Gleason, the charity founded by former New Orleans Saint, Steve Gleason, who was diagnosed with ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Yours truly will be at the launch party, since I won the “Name the New Beer” contest.   I will put out a review the day after so stay tuned for the verdict.
